The following is a reference list of ENERGY Systems SA’s experience in South Africa with regards to CDM activities and provides an overview of the depth and scope of CDM services that ENERGY Systems SA is capable of offering.
To date ENERGY Systems has been involved in the verification and issuance of over 1 million CERs.
ENERGY Systems SA has successfully registered six landfill sites for CDM projects both under the small scale and the large scale methodologies. These are:
Five landfill sites under the Joburg landfill gas to electricity CDM projects registered in November 2012 under UNFCCC registration number: 6797
The Alton landfill gas to electricity project registered in August 2009 under UNFCCC registration number : 2549.
ENERGY Systems SA has subsequently developed the framework for a POA for landfill gas projects in South Africa. ENERGY Systems SA has assisted the consultant to the City of Cape Town in the development of their POA for landfill gas to electricity projects. ENERGY Systems SA and its staff have been involved in the development of projects from the conceptual stage right the way through to successful registration and has a good understanding of the qualification criteria for a landfill gas CDM project. In addition we have worked with four DOE’s in this regard and this has developed broad understanding of their approach to registration of projects.
ENERGY Systems SA has been involved in the operation and maintenance of four landfill gas CDM sites that have produced CER and these are listed below.
The Chloorkop landfill gas CDM project (Registration number: 0925) which is an EnviroServ owned project.
ENERGY Systems SA was involved in the design of the gas collection system, supplied gas extraction and flaring plant into this project. ENERGY Systems SA was then contracted in 2008 to operate and maintain this project as well as compile and calculate the CERs produced from this site. This included all the data management and calculations for the emission reductions as well as the development and implementation of a quality monitoring system for the project activities. This contract is still in place and ENERGY Systems SA has operated and maintained the plant for the past 6 years and in this time successfully verified 853 316 CERs in total for EnviroServ.

ENERGY Joburg holds an active account on the Market Registry held in London for trading Verified Carbon Units and maintains a holding account with the UNFCCC. ENERGY Systems SA is actively involved with National Treasury with regards to the development and implementation of the upcoming carbon tax which is set to start on the 1 June 2019.
ENERGY Systems SA has been involved in landfill gas utilisation projects for over 10 years.
ENERGY Systems SA has developed a number of CDM projects that cover 7 landfill sites and has successfully implemented and continues to operate and maintain these projects in their entirety.
